The first issue of The Journal was an eight-page publication.

Apart from news items and a short article on financial EDI, the main topic was a case study on Timson Shoe Repairs and its 325 retail branches throughout the UK—135 million pairs of shoes repaired since 1903.

The other main article was the first in the
"Dream Machine" series, advising users on PCs and the deployment of client/server technology. This first article explained how the display monitor works and explored the likely future of liquid crystal displays.
